42nd Istanbul Music Festival kicked off
with an Award Ceremony and Opening Concert

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, with Borusan Holding as its sponsor since 2006, the 42nd Istanbul Music Festival began on Sunday, 1 June evening with an Award Ceremony and Opening Concert held at the Lütfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Center. The festival brings nearly 800 musicians of international renown to Istanbul, while also hosting two world premieres.

Before the ceremony, the Borusan Children's Choir, directed by Gülsen Yavuzkal, performed a short concert in the foyer. The award ceremony started with the presentation of plaques to organisations and corporations in recognition of their contribution in the realization of the festival. The thank you plaques were presented to the Vice-Consul for Cultural Affairs at the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Istanbul, Łukasz Paprotny for the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Istanbul's valued support, to the Prince's Islands Municipality Town Councillor at the first rant Sencer Demirel for the Prince's Islands Municipality's venue support, to the Kadıköy Municipality Mayor's Advisor and Süreyya Opera's General Coordinator Murat Katoğlu on behalf of the Kadıköy Municipality, to the Boğaziçi University Classical Music Coordinator Evin İlyasoğlu on behalf of Boğaziçi University, to TÜRSAB President Başaran Ulusoy on behalf of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB), and to Zurich Sigorta A.Ş CEO Yılmaz Yıldız on behalf of İKSV's service sponsor Zurich Sigorta A.Ş.

In addition, on behalf of Polimeks Construction, the festival's highest contributing performance sponsor, Chairman of the Board Erol Tabanca, on behalf of performance sponsor Türkiye İş Bankası, providing the festival with venue support through the İş Sanat Concert Hall, General Manager Senar Akkuş, on behalf of E.C.A. Die-Casting Inc., Chairman of the Board Gaye Akçen, and on behalf of Mercedes-Benz Turkey Inc., Head of Directors' Committee Rainer Genes were each presented with thank you plaques. The plaque for Borusan Holding, supporter of the Istanbul Music Festival for the last nine years, was presented to General Manager of Borusan Culture and Arts Ahmet Erenli. All plaques were given by İKSV Chairman Bülent Eczacıbaşı.

Istanbul Music Festival's annual “Honorary Award” conferred on artists for their valuable contribution in the world of classical music, was given this year to Gülsin Onay, who enjoys an international career with the leading orchestras and conductors of the world and who has played a major role in introducing Ahmed Adnan Saygun's music to the world.

Gülsin Onay has concertized in 68 countries through 5 continents, with such orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, and St. Petersburg Philharmonic and with distinguished conductors, including Vladimir Ashkenazy and Esa-Pekka Salonen among many others. As the founding artistic advisor of the Gümüşlük Classical Music Festival and the Eklisia Summer Music School, Gülsin Onay endeavours to nourish the cultural life and supports the education of up-and-coming musicians in our country. In addition, Gülsin Onay is the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Turkey and regularly gives concerts to benefit charities, both home and abroad.

The soloist of the opening concert that followed was the young cellist Dorukhan Doruk, who was named the “Young Musician of the Year” at the 2011 Donizetti Classical Music Awards and won the first prize along with five other awards at the International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition, He played Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op.33, accompanied the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by conductor Gürer Aykal. The opening concert honoured the festival theme "The Song of Nature" with Ahmet Adnan Saygun's A Forest Tale, Op.17. The orchestra also performed Mendelssohn's Symphony No.3 in A minor, "Scottish", Op.56.

Until the 27th of June, the 42nd Istanbul Music Festival hosts nearly 800 international artists in Istanbul, including Steven Isserlis, Isabelle van Keulen, Alexander Raskatov, Nelson Freire, Pepe Romero, Krzysztof Penderecki, Xavier de Maistre, Yuja Wang, as well as some of the world's leading orchestras such as the Sinfonia Varsovia and the Venezuela Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra.
