42nd Festival Honours Gülsin Onay and Zubin Mehta

42nd Istanbul Music Festival confers its Honorary Award on pianist Gülsin Onay, one of Turkey's "child prodigies" who has since built a distinguished international career spanning 68 countries across all continents, from Venezuela to Japan. An exceptional Chopin and Rachmaninov interpreter, she is also acknowledged worldwide as the finest interpreter of the music of Saygun and has inspired contemporary composers, including Saygun and Stuppner, to dedicate works to her. She has performed with such orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, St Petersburg Philharmonic, Dresden Staatskapelle, and Tokyo Symphony, and with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Andrey Boreyko, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Jose Serebrier. She is the founding Artistic Advisor of the Gümüşlük Classical Music Festival and Eklisia Summer Music Academy, whereby her musical endeavours extend to fostering young talents. She takes a special interest in the promotion of charitable causes, giving charity concerts for NGOs around the world and for UNICEF Turkey, for whom she is a Goodwill Ambassador. Gülsin Onay will be presented her award at the ceremony on the opening night of the festival, on June 1st Sunday.

The festival's Lifetime Achievement Award will be bestowed upon one of the greatest conductors of our times, Zubin Mehta. He had already conducted the Vienna, Berlin, and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras by the age of 25.  During his illustrious career that is decorated with many awards and honours, he has held the post of Music Director to the Montreal Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic (for a record-breaking 13 years, the longest tenure in the orchestra's history), Bavarian State Opera, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (of which he was appointed the Honorary Director for Life on the occasion of his 70th birthday), and the Israel Philharmonic (of which he was to become the Music Director for Life in 1981). Zubin Mehta has given well over 2000 concerts and toured five continents with the Israel Philharmonic alone. His support to young artists all around the world and use of music for humanitarian causes disregard to boundaries or conflicts stand out as a prime witness to the unifying power of music. A scion of the line of legendary composers who have left their marks on classical music throughout history, Maestro Mehta will receive his award at a ceremony before the concert on June 21st Saturday, at the Hagia Eirene Museum.
