41st Istanbul Music Festival finds its young soloist

The project, “Festival in Search of its Young Soloist” was held in cello in its second year. Open to cellists of up to and including 24 years of age, the auditions saw a total of 13 Turkish students studying in Turkey and abroad and yielded the 17 year-old Cansın Kara as the “young soloist” of the 41st Istanbul Music Festival.

“Festival in Search of its Young Soloist” was held in violin last year for the first time and it was met with great acclaim by the critics and audiences alike. This year’s project that concentrated in cello enjoyed a turn-out of 13 exceptionally good young musicians who currently study at such schools as the Çukurova University State Conservatoire, Ankara University State Conservatoire, Hacettepe University State Conservatoire, Bremen Fine Arts University, Anadolu University State Conservatoire, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatoire, Yehudi Menuhin School, Mersin University State Conservatoire, Paris Regional Conservatoire, and the Salzburg Mozarteum University.

A jury comprising the Mersin University State Conservatoire professor cellist Münif Akalın,  Istanbul University State Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra conductor Ramiz Malik Aslanov, Istanbul Technical University Centre for Advanced Studies in Music co-chair Cihat Aşkın, Anadolu University State Conservatoire professor cellist Melih Kara, Istanbul Music Festival Director Yeşim Gürer Oymak, and Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatoire professor cellist Dilbağ Tokay listened to the candidates in the national auditions on 2 March, Saturday at the MIAM İlhan Usmanbaş Hall.

Cansın Kara was chosen to be the Young Soloist of the Festival who will play with the Istanbul University State Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Ramiz Malik Aslanov in the 41st Istanbul Music Festival.

Born on 8 December 1995, Cansın Kara studied with Marina Rahmatullayeva and Gara Aliyev at the Bilkent University Music Preparatory School. He was accepted in the Yehudi Menuhin School in 2010, where he is currently studying Thomas Carroll. Cansın won the Mersin 1st National Cello Competition in 2008 and came third in the 7th International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition in Croatia the same year. He won the second prize in the 10th Austria-Liezen International Cello Competition in 2010. Besides performing at various centres in Turkey, including the Ankara University and Bolu İzzet Baysal University concert halls, he gave recitals at the Marshall University Music School and Meadowmount Music School in the United States. Cansın made his orchestral debut at the age of 13 with the Mersin University Academic Symphony Orchestra and played with the Bilkent Youth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gürer Aykal in 2010.

Cansın Kara will render Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C with the Istanbul University State Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Ramiz Malik Aslanov on 10 June 2013 at the Süreyya Opera House. The orchestra will also play Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony.
